Preparing people to meet God in the Sacraments is a responsibility which is taken very seriously in the Parish, and we are blessed with an experienced team of religious and lay catechists who take on this vital role.

Baptism

There is a preparation course for parents who wish to have their child baptised. It consists of four meetings over four weeks. A booklet containing topics and dates is available.

Adults are also prepared for baptism through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). This is a community- based programme designed to meet the needs of the candidates' own personal journey in faith. A group of inquirers meet on a weekly basis at St. Gildas' Convent. If you wish to know more, or wish to be a sponsor, please contact the Parish Priest.

Children in the Parish who have reached Year 3 at school, i.e. who will be turning 8 years old in that school year, are eligible to be prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Children who are attending St Gildas' School will be prepared at school. Those attending non-Catholic schools can attend classes, which take place in the Parish rooms with our Parish catechists.

Confirmation

Each year, a 9-week course is run in the Parish by our catechists to prepare candidates for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Young adults have to be 14 years old during the school year in which they receive the Sacrament.

Adults who have not been confirmed are also prepared for Confirmation in order to complete their initiation into the life of the Church.

Marriage

One of the priests in the Parish prepares those wishing to receive the Sacrament of Marriage.

Couples should be aware that it is necessary to give at least 6 months notice before we are able to celebrate the Sacrament.

Preparation consists of a preliminary interview with one of the priests, a 3-week wedding course and an engaged couples weekend.

Ordination

We pray for more vocations to the priesthood and the religious life, in our own Parish and in the Church in general.

The Parish of St Peter-in-Chains also supports the Serra Club which fosters vocations in the Church. Those who wish to participate can put their names down to offer up one Mass a month for vocations

Anointing of the Sick

A priest is always at hand to attend the seriously ill whether at home or in hospital to celebrate the Sacrament of the Sick.

The priests and Eucharistic Ministers also visit the sick and housebound at hospital or in their homes with Holy Communion.
